Are your Shopify product reviews accessible?

An accessible Shopify review section announces the rating as text rather than relying on star graphics, makes every review reachable and operable by keyboard, keeps decorative stars out of the tab order, traps nothing inside review carousels or write-a-review modals, and gives sort and filter controls real labels and announced state changes.

The star rating nobody can hear

The most common review failure is a rating communicated only through graphics. Five star icons with no text alternative tell a screen reader user nothing, or worse, announce five separate meaningless images. The fix is a visually hidden text alternative on the rating as a whole: 4.5 out of 5 stars, based on 212 reviews. One announcement replaces five confusing ones, and it works for every assistive technology without any widget changes.

Individual review stars need the same treatment. A review that shows four stars and no text equivalent forces the assistive technology user to guess. Rate each review's stars as a group with a single label, and keep decorative star graphics out of the tab order entirely. Stars are information, not controls, and tabbing through them one by one is pure friction.

Carousels that trap keyboard users

Review widgets love carousels, and carousels love keyboard traps. The typical failure: arrow controls that are not buttons, auto-rotation that moves content while the user is reading it, and no way to pause. A keyboard user tabs into the carousel and finds themselves advancing through reviews with no announcement of where they are or how many remain.

If the widget must carousel, the controls must be real buttons with labels like next reviews and previous reviews, auto-rotation must pause on focus and on hover, and the current position should be announced. Better yet, most stores would convert better with a simple stacked list and a load more button. Carousels hide the social proof they are supposed to showcase.

The write-a-review modal

The review form itself is a second accessibility surface, usually in a modal. The modal must move focus into the form when it opens and return focus to the write a review button when it closes. The star input for the rating is the hardest part: a set of radio buttons labeled one star through five stars is the accessible pattern, and it is what most custom star pickers fail to implement.

Form validation needs care too. A review form that rejects a submission with only a color change, or with an error message at the top of a modal the user cannot find, loses the review and the reviewer. Errors must be announced, associated with their fields, and the focus must move to the first error. Test this with a keyboard alone and the failures announce themselves.

Sort, filter, and helpful votes

Sort and filter controls are often custom dropdowns with no keyboard support and no announced state. A sort control should be a real select or a button with an expanded state, and changing the sort must announce that the review list updated. Filter checkboxes for verified purchases or star levels need real labels, not placeholder text that vanishes.

Helpful vote buttons are small but telling. Was this review helpful, yes and no, must be real buttons with pressed states, and the vote count update must be announced politely rather than shouted. These are five-minute fixes that most review apps have never made.

How to audit your reviews

Start with the keyboard: reach the rating, read every review, open and submit the form, sort and filter, all without a mouse. Then with a screen reader: confirm the rating is announced as text, confirm the review count, and confirm the modal focus behavior. Review widgets are third-party code you did not write, but their failures are your liability, and your customers experience them as your store.
